The following literature review is on an report from The Flipped Learning Network  regarding the growing popularity of the "Flipped Classroom". This concept allows teachers to really save valuable time gives students power over their own learning pace and structure. What's really great is that it works with both a traditional hour and block schedules and it engages students because it integrates the effective use of technology. (See my Ed Tech Tab (Page) to view the definition and four pillars of flipped learning - links also provided below.

Creating positive classroom environments is extremely important. I have noticed that many student and veteran teachers spend a great deal of their time managing classroom behavior. My observations applies to both pre-service and in-service teacher's. The main issue is lack of engaging lesson plans and lack of technology integration. I have stated
this many times to my colleagues that if they are not using technology to engage their students they have effectively lost their audience. Another issue is that the old, direct style of lecturing promotes bad classroom behaviors because the students are bored. If you engage students through project based collaborative learning, hands-on relevant projects and create a student-centered learning experience where you, as the teacher, act in the role as a facilitator, mentor and guide classroom management and distraction will be greatly minimized. There needs to be an adjustment by teachers in the way they conceptualize their classrooms - the "front of the classroom, back of the classroom" needs to change and teachers need to understand that they need to be in the trenches with their students. If students feel like they are part of their own learning process, that their opinions and interests matter, then their attitudes dramatically change. The following artifacts are from my Classroom Management course at National University.

#3: CLASS MANAGEMENT JOURNAL REFLECTION ON READINGS: IDEA & FERPA
This artifact is a reflection from the readings in my Class Management course regarding protecting the rights of all students, IDEA and FERPA, Expulsion laws, IEP's, discrimination, hate/violence prevention act and the safe place to learn act.

The following literature review is based on 21st Century classroom designs - also known as "learning commons". It's actually a review of a vendor who supplies furniture to schools. It is very insightful look at how classrooms should be arranged and what type of learning environments are most effective. I have also downloaded a PDF file they produced on learning commons. I prefer modular furniture and collaborative small group settings to traditional classroom settings. However I also believe that it is a good idea to keep student moving and if they can learn outside even better.
