DOMAIN D: TPE 8 & 9

I teach high school so understanding patterns of
adolescent development are crucial. Before student teaching in high school I helped my mentor during summer school with a group of 20
junior high kids that were considered "At Risk" and were not quite ready for high school. It was the districts hope that this summer school class would prepare them. They all had some sort of behavioral issue. This was my first time working with junior high students and what a challenge it was! They are "tweeners" in between childhood and teens. They are moody, full of energy, confused, and trying to find themselves. I decided I would show them a video I found on Frontline/PBS called Inside The Teen Brain. They were mesmerized and asked to see it again -- because it was about them, made for them, to try and help them understand what they were going through in terms of sleep patterns, moodiness, rebelliousness towards parents and teachers, video gaming, etc. They were shocked at the fact that their brains don't fully develop until they are 25! When I started student teaching in high school that fall, many of the kids in that remediation class where now kids in my class! They were so happy to see me and seriously, I did not recognize any of them -- they grew way too fast. Many high school teachers avoid freshman all together because they are "all over the board" hormonally and immature. I love dealing with them - it's a challenge, but fun and it gives me a chance to help them get on the right track. All parents, teachers and teens should watch the following show -- it is really insightful.

It is important for teachers to understand the various health issues of their students mental, physical, and emotional. Health wise we are a Nation at risk and there is a need for comprehensive school health education.  The following artifacts include a Webliography I did in the Health course hear at National University on Diabetes, detailed notes from a Class Live Pro session on how we are a nation at risk and the need for school education, detailed notes from a Class Live Pro session on bullying (See TPE F for more artifacts and resources on bullying),

#1: WEBLIOGRAPHY:
One of the greatest health issues facing kids today is diabetes. I have Type I diabetes and understand the challenges of the disease well and how it impacts learning. The following webliography done as part of my health course at National University outlines a valuable resources on this issue for teachers, parents, and students. Health Webliography on Diabetes

#2: CLASS LIVE PRO NOTES:
The following Class Live Pro session was held on bullying as part of our Health class at National University. It provides some valuable insights and tips on how to recognize and prevent bullying at school and online (cyberbullying).

#3: CLASS LIVE PRO NOTES:
The following Class Live Pro session was held as part of the Health class at National University on the CA Ed Code to review the sections that pertain to student health. The instructor shared some valuable personal experiences, laws, and insights that new teachers should be aware of concerning the handling of student health issues. Health Class Live Pro Notes on CA Ed Code

#4: CLASS LIVE PRO NOTES:
The following Class Live Pro session was held as a part of the Health class at National University Communicable and Chronic Diseases that are having on impact on students in schools today. Health Class Live Pro on Communicable and Chronic Diseases

#5: DISCUSSION BOARD:
The following artifact is my discussion board response to the value of having a coordinated school health program in place is, what it is, and who the stakeholders are as well as becoming an advocate for student health.  Coordinated School Health Program and Stakeholders

# 6: DISCUSSION BOARD:
The following artifact is my discussion board response to student health education in general and how student health and fitness can be integrated into every curriculum.

#7: DISCUSSION BOARD:
The following artifact is my discussion board response to student health in terms of the physical condition of the classroom how family and other social and environmental factors impact the students ability to learn. Student Environmental, Social and Emotional Health Factors that Impact Learning

#8: HEALTH BEHAVIOR CONTRACT AND REFLECTION:
The following artifacts represent a two-part project for the health class at National University on creating a health behavior contract for self-monitoring. This project was excellent -- definitely something that you can utilize personally and have your student create and implement. Health Behavior Contract Part A Health Behavior Contract Part B

#9: HEALTH LESSON PLAN CRITIQUE:
The following artifact is a critique of a health lesson plan that we had to do in our Health Class at National University. This assignment inspired me to write me own lesson plan based on APP. Health Lesson Plan Critique My Health Lesson Plan

#10: HEALTH COURSE FILE FOLDER:
This file folder contains valuable lessons and resources from my
Health course at National University. This health was hands down one of the best courses I took at National University. It inspired me to take the Health CSETs and get my supplemental credential in health eventually. Health Course File Folder

#11: CERTIFICATES OF COMPLETION - CA HEALTH KIDS RESOURCE CENTER
The following file folder contains my certificates of completion for the California Health Kids Resource Center which supports California schools in
creating safe and caring school environments and delivering effective instruction and services for students’ health and safety. I took these courses during my Health Course here at National University. They were not mandatory, but I decided to check out this valuable resource and take the courses. After taking the courses I believe all pre-service and in-service teachers should take the time as part of their professional development and take these courses regardless of what subject they teach - actually they should be a mandatory part of obtaining your credential. CA Health Kids Training Certificates of Completion

Instructional planning is so important. During my observations as a student teacher that was one of the main components that was sorely lacking in teachers was good lesson plans or any lesson plan at all. So many of the teachers I observed relied solely on the pre-packaged materials that accompanied the text. This is not necessarily bad, but they lacked the ability to engage and motivate students. In addition, there was very little or no use of technology. In today's classroom if you are not using technology to teach you have effectively lost your audience. Kids today are simply wired differently than us and using technology just makes sense. One common misconception among teacher's is that technology is the "silver bullet" and takes the place of having to design good lesson. This is not the case at all. First comes the curriculum and planning and then comes the integration of technology. In order to plan engaging lessons, teachers have to go beyond the basic principles knowing what they want to teach, how they are going to teach it and how they are going to check for understanding.  They need to use use creativity, embrace new teaching methodologies, use technology and get rid of the "front of the classroom, back of the classroom" mentality. Teachers must also understand how to reach ALL different types of learners or students with exceptionalities such as ELL, GATE and students with special needs.

#14: YouTube Video on Instructional Planning

The following literature review is based on one school district that is really an example of what technology integration and planning is all about. I wanted to review an article that highlighted the importance of integrating technology in the classroom. What I found was one of the best school district web-site's on the subject that is incredible source of information - one that I will refer to often. Their web-site is: http://www.lafsd.k12.ca.us/techplan. I highly suggest taking the time to go to their web-site and review all of the resources including common core standards, ISTE and NETS standards, iPad 1:1 challenges and opportunities, a guide for parents to 21st Century learning, videos and much more!
